Karl Marx Quotes

• "Capitalist production, therefore, develops technology, and the combining together of various processes into a social whole, only by sapping the original sources of all wealth - the soil and the labourer."

• "
Capital is reckless of the health or length of life of the laborer, unless under compulsion from society."

• "
Democracy is the road to socialism."

• "
Anyone who knows anything of history knows that great social changes are impossible without feminine upheaval. Social progress can be measured exactly by the social position of the fair sex, the ugly ones included."

• "
Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks."

A revolution without a plan

Marx told them to have a plan but . . . ok so now you know a little more about Karl Marx & Emile Durkheim.  Look over to the right here & see the "poll" - vote for movie(s) you want selected for the mid-term paper which is due 2 weeks from today.  I'll report choice by Saturday morning, giving you 1.5 weeks to get the ONE movie you choose from the 2 highest vote getters.
Next week, four things:  1) chart on Raging Bull 2) everyone read "The Stranger" and write 1/2 to 1 page on it.  3) Group B people read Chapter 5 in the book "Knowing People" (on reserve in library).   4) comment on this post
AND LOOK also to the Right:  I finally posted the link to the great 6 part, 5 hour series on Civilization from the Harvard Professor.  Just try Part 1 and see if you love it.

This article shocked me... Could accused Norway killer land in luxurious prison?

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/accused-norway-killer-may-land-luxurious-prison-173329040.html

Should the punished deserve luxury to better build them up, give them confidence through education and work and have them leave as better people? That's what the region's governor, Are Hoidal, said at the prison's opening ceremony last year.
He believes that prisons should focus on "human rights and respect." What do you think?

Social Experiments

Hey everyone,  Very sorry for joining so late. I've been quite busy prepping and shooting my thesis project for CCH, but now I'm all ears and ready to be a part of the topics of convo.

I wanted to share a pretty interesting social experiment done by ABC, which shows a staged situation in which a black woman is being discriminated by store clerks, and the reactions of the customers.

It seems that so many people claim to not be racist but when they're put to the test in public scenarios in which others are being discriminated by the majority or authority, they become passive and would rather have nothing to do with it, or even side with the discriminators when under pressure.

Check it out and think about the next time you're faced with a situation like this and how you'd react, really..

Gang Mentality in Apes

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1288367/Chimps-violent-killing-sprees-land-neighbours.html

Whenever I hear someone talking about gang life in a positive light, I always recall a lecture I heard about the similarities between Ape and Human Gangs. I found this article but it does not list the similarities, it just explains that chimps form gangs. What I was told, gangs are formed amongst weak apes in order to rape female apes. In human gangs, when a girl wants to join, she must have sex with everyone in the gang and likewise for the apes. In both species the weak less dominate males join gangs in order to become stronger and loose their virginities. What does that tell you?

Fight club Monologue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJdfWdIBfE8&playnext=1&list=PLFCBF8F2E2837B311

Tyler Durden-Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.

Mid Term Paper

I kind of forgot what our mid term paper has to be about. Can someone reiterate that for me? Thanks!

An interesting quote my younger sister posted on her facebook

"Behind our beautiful smiles... deep down, we all are in pain over something."

POV of dreams

I've always been fascinated by dreams; both lucid dreaming and subconscious meanings behind dreams. One thing I've noticed in my dreams is that sometimes I'm seeing the dream and what is happening to me from my POV and then othertimes I'll watch what is happening to me as an outsider from a third person perspective. I don't doubt that most people have experienced both, but I wonder which one is more common? I thought this might be a nice place to try and poll that.

Are your dreams usually from your POV or third person POV? Have you experienced both or just one?

fun to see convo-threads

it's fun to see if anyone comments on your posts and comments, so when you make a comment (even to your own post) see you can ask to have further comments sent to your InBox - then you can just sit back rather than go checking for them.  WP:  are you able to make comments yet?

Another interesting quote from new film "The Amazing Spider-Man" teaser trailer.

"We all have secrets... The ones that we keep, and the ones that are kept from us."

Barry Lyndon

For those of you who watched Barry Lyndon, who do you think is the second main character? I got little confused on who is the second most -significant character in the movie is...

Alien Implants? Shocking Truth!

Old..but new comment

I didn't get the chance to comment on whether or not I felt I belonged in the proper group of "informal or formal" and "go with the flow or controlled". My group was with the control and formal people, I think that justices my position because I am a very controlling and formal person. I want things to go my way or I won't do them, I tend to choose the best ethical and efficient way to execute my goals and ideas, but however I am apt to change and suggestions, but overall it's my way or the highway. As for formality, I like things in proper order and tamed, I can get crazy when it calls for the occasion but I prefer punctuality, order, and self-discipline overall in my living lifestyle.

Life Beyond Earth

Fundamental Attribution Error

Talk about FAE!  Last night on RedEyeRadio I heard about this city where the cops overtime hours are being cut back and some of them, because they had grown accustomed to the extra pay and high living that goes with it, have turned to a secret life of crime!  How bizarre is that?  When we see a uniform, is that what we think about?

4 Quads: comment here (assigned for this week)

TWO LAYERS OF QUADS
Individual
:  1  Decisions (objectives) 2 Operations (actions)  3  NetworkSupport  4 Change
Social:  1  Goals (objectives) 2  Procedures-Operations (actions) 3   Integration-Networks 4  Change
Please comment here:  the 4 areas, the movement between the 4
Questions?  Clarification?  Examples?

Look at the health care bill - I started to mention it and drifted off.  The decision was made - and "then we read the bill" to find out what was in it.  Then the public clamored.
V for Vendetta - Goal of V was to get revenge - but (change) he stumbled upon EV in the alley and had to help because that was the kind of guy he was.  Then she saved his life by macing the guard!  He had no choice but to kidnap her.  Then, keeping to his goal, he instituted a new practice or procedure (kidnapping EV).  He did not ask her if she would like to be kidnapped (i.e., didn't check in with her feelings-network zone).  That "operation" changed both of them:  First, he fell in love (and he did not tell her that either).  Then, in love, he trapped her more deeply - on the inside, not only the outside - to free her and allow her to see her own (occluded, hidden) objective, which was to stop hiding and see the truth.
Look at your individual life - when did you set a new goal?  How did you proceed?  did you immediately find the new operations to enact it?  did you "check with" yourself and your network?  what happened?

Is There One Move That’s More Likely to Win a Game of Rock-Paper-Scissors?

To answer this question, we turned to the archives of the World Rock-Paper-Scissors Society (seriously!), where we found that RPS players rely on strategy, not probability, to win. From the playground to the annual International World RPS Tournament (really, people, we’re not kidding), outwitting your opponent is job No. 1 for serious competitors.
According to the Society, one way to guess what hand someone will throw out is to know how many rounds they’ve won so far. Players who are in the lead will often use scissors, because it’s believed to symbolize aggression, while paper is used for a more subtle attack. Rock is usually a last resort, when players feel their strategies are failing. There are also techniques you can use to mask your move, such as cloaking, in which players will pretend to throw rock and then stick out two fingers at the last second to make scissors. In addition, the true professionals (who do exist) will use sets of three moves, called "gambits," to help them make their moves out of strategy, not reaction.
But that’s not all. The Society also keeps track of how common moves are, particularly as they relate to mentions of RPS in pop culture. For instance, after "The Simpsons" episode where Bart beats Lisa with rock and thinks to himself "Good old rock, nothing beats it," the Society recorded a .3 percent upswing in the use of rock.
But if you’re gonna play, be prepared to pay; RPS can be a dangerous sport. In the late 1980’s, Kenyan Mustafa Nwenge lost a match and the use of a finger when an overzealous opponent "cut his paper" a little too hard and crushed Nwenge’s finger ligaments.
