Teen brains aren't fully formed:

Parents of stubborn teenagers rejoice, or at least relax: That adolescent attitude stems, in part, from the vagaries of brain development.  The gray matter of the brain peaks just before puberty and is pruned back down throughout adolescence, with some of the most dramatic development happening in the frontal lobes, the seat of judgment and decision-making.

A 2005 study published in the journal Child Development found that the parts of the brain responsible for multitasking don't fully mature until we're 16 or 17 years old. Rsearch presented at the BA Festival of Science in 2006 revealed that teens also have a neural excuse for self-centeredness. When considering an action that would affect others, teens were less likely than adults to use the medial prefrontal cortex, an area associated with empathy and guilt. Teens learn empathy by practicing socializing, the researchers said. So much for grounding them until they're 20. LINK

Why I'm here and my Sign

There is not a day when I don't ask myself,"Why am I at CCH?" But every time I do my mind begins to roll back to those dark yet beautiful days of my life while living in Riverside. I can still remember trying so hard to stop my house from being taken away while directing and acting in my first film at my community college.

Loosing my house and not being able to finish my film project hurt, but not as much as loosing my kids on my wrestling team. I try not to coach other teams because I'm always reminded of them and that sends a sharp pain in my heart. I miss their smiles. I miss them running up to me giving me hugs and telling me that they love me. I miss college and my old friends. I lost everyone and everything in that vile year, 2008.

As for my sign, I never believed in that kind of stuff until I sat down and read about it. Yes, some of it is very general, but most of it was true for me. As I kept reading everything became clear. I saw my life flash before me over and over. I saw all my struggles and my triumphs from childhood to now. I saw the people I should have said, "I love you." to but let go in the end. I learned that I am a healer and an adventurer (I already knew this, but I was reassured).

Now I'm here at a school that I really had no choice but to come to in some ways, but I go on because of my past. Some say to let go of the past. My past is where I draw my strength. The scars are deep and they still hurt, but that's why I'm here. That's why I go on. I can....I will make it.

Why We Have Sex

four reasons  PS:  Did we need a study, or did we know this already?

Howdy ya'll!

What a great quarter this has been. This class, in combination with many other things going on in my life, has really given me a new perspective on my "reality." I'm much more open to inspiration and free to let myself fall into the moment. I have begun to see the difference between the "is" and "ought" and I am understanding why they should not overlap. This has helped me almost eliminate stressing about anything in life and I have achieved so much more in this quarter than any other because of my new perspective. There is so much more I have gained from this class that I know I am just not aware of. As much as Maureen disliked Inception she has used its concept of planting an idea in someone's mind every day in our class. Although, Maureen is so good at it that she doesn't need the help of a fancy device that allows her to invade our dreams. I know a month, a year, 5 years, 10 years from now I am going to discover new insights into my life that I can trace back to Maureen's teachings.

I'll thank you ahead of time for this inception.

The Milgram Experiment

Hi all!

I'd like to share a short film that I made last fall about a subject that I'm very curious about. I wanna talk about Influence and Authority.
I wrote and directed this fictional reenactment of the famous Milgram Experiment.
You can watch the short film below and if you'd like to know more about the project, you can check my original post on LiveAndy.com.

A summer of truth

I've learned so much about human beings more than I have before. What I know now is that the power of love has no limits. Male and female are different yet the same. Being emotional, for a male, isn't weak or gay or stupid. It's human nature.

What's ironic is that the problems in this world do not rest in a lack of money or fame, the problems rest in our lack to understand and love. I learned this summer to continue to keep my will strong, but also to find and keep a sense of peace within myself by looking at nature and surrounding myself with people I love and showing my love to them.

I feel much more liberated and fearless now than I was before.

Final Exam question - with list of concepts

REMEMBER 3 things due Thursday:  watch "Sense & Sensibility" - write about Romanticism & Classicism (or heart v. mind) and post something that you have learned from social science from this class.   here is an interesting piece on romanticism

Woman Vs. Disney

A little over a week ago, something interesting happened at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.
A worker, (aka, "Cast member"), who's a hostess for one of the resorts hotel restaurants sparked a heated battle with Disney for not allowing her to wear her hijab, or traditional head scarf.

Of course with that tid bit alone, it paints Disney in a malicious light. What corporation wouldn't allow their employee to wear something on behalf their religious belief?!

But what's been hidden from the public is the history of the long, on-going battle between UNITE HERE local 11 (union for hotel workers where her restaurant is located) & Disney. What's also hidden from the public is that the woman has worked for Disney for TWO years, and hadn't shown up to work wearing her hijab until now.

Movies I watched

Two are:   "Paris Hilton Drops her Lip Glass" and "Stereotypes about Police and Media."  I feel as if I am in a movie, with you giving the teacher these choices.  Yikes! Also watched one called "Disney Meets Ken Wilbur."  I may have gotten those three titles a bit mixed up.  Liked Sister Sara.  Roger Rabbit was much fun - be prepared to discuss Rabbit and E M O T I O N.

Love and a Quiz

Assignments are to be read.  Did I mention one boss' comment, which was a favorite of mine:  "People do what is inspected, not what is expected."  Consequently, know that there will be pop quiz of 10 questions on Thursday from this week's chapter reading, which is chapter 9.  Also see from another post that you have an assignment!

the rule of law

First and foremost it is the notion that we are ruled by laws that are written down rather than by the ruler’s whim.

Idiocracy

just saw it.  good luck relating it to the rule of law ... and influence :)
Pondering it more this morning, I think the thing is:  humans like symbols.  To be human IS to be a symbol-maker and symbol-relater.  A leader IS a symbol.  Groups appear always to have a leader - or the group disbands.  Ever been around a friend and neither one of you knows what to do?  No decisions?  The friendship dissolves.  So since groups have leaders (or they dissolve) one question is:  will the leader act according to his own will/emotions/decisions - or by a set of standards.  What did we see in "Idiocracy?"
What a COSTCO that was!

Meetups

meetup.com can be nice:  here are some meetup groups for filmmakers   The main one on that link is a producers group - but see down the left side some other meetup groups.

Me and I

Just saw Devil Wears Pravda.  Question:  Does Ann Hathaway have the most eyeball space per face surface on the planet?  Anyway, when she entered the job she was a "me" - the kind Miranda delineated, thinking she was a rebel and untouched by fashion.  Then fate had her become a fashion "me" under the Miranda tutalage.  Finally she became an "I", very nicely supported by her Northwestern and her Runway me performances - "me" enough to be her own "I".  Make sense?  Which thinker spoke of "me" and "I"?  It was George Herbert Mead.  Remember the "Me" and the "I" are always both at play, with one in the lead.  The "Self" is a process of me-I-me-I-me, etc.

Using the blog!

Hey everyone. I've been on vacation since the 16th, and wanted to check in. It's been difficult getting to a computer w/internet, but at last, I've found one!

There are lots of different people here, and it's quite odd going from such a huge city to a small little mountain town. I've had lots of fun observing the differences in lifestyle and just the little things that are done differently. I've also had a lot of fun getting back into the 'small town' living. It's so interesting how used to LA I've become in the few years I've lived there.

Hope class went well last week!  I'm quite surprised no one has been using this. I thought for sure the on-blog assignment would make people use it more often. I know I'm going to try to use the blog. I think it's a very different approach to class design, but it makes things interesting.

See you all Thursday!
(MT: Is there anything else I should know beside what is on the blog to bring to class next week? And should I bring my paper on free will from last week? Or email it to you? Thanks!)

Chap 1 and "Saved!"

You will learn one concept in Chapter 1.   Apply it to the movie "Saved!"
Each of you will comment here with 2paragraphs - 2 instances of how you see that concept at work in "Saved!".  If you are first, you might "capture" it well and some of the subsequent posters will probably have to imitate you.  Question is:  where do we get our beliefs?

Tell a Story - Here is my story

I created a blog for the class.  One person participated in it right away, and I happily replied - and then nothing:  day after day, nothing. There was no participation.  Are students in class just because they think they must be in class?  Do they want nothing from it but the fulfillment of a requirement?  Is learning a bore?  I thought of Otto Rank:  should I destroy the blog, run and hide from the blog or re-create the blog?   I picked re-create:  I decided to put an assignment here every week.  This week, your assignment is to tell a story.  See you at 2pm.
